Starry NightTeacher's Discovery Traveling Exhibit

Vincent Van Gogh

Café Terrace at NightFrom February 17 through April 6, 2009, Rosenberg Library hosted a traveling exhibit featuring artist Vincent Van Gogh.  Designed especially for children and families, these large scale images on lightweight satin were designed to captivate all ages with their intense emotion and vivid color. The set included five of Van Gogh's works: “Starry Night” 1889, “Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear and Pipe” 1889, “Yellow Wheat and Cypresses” 1889, “Café Terrace at Night” 1888, and “Trees in the Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital” 1889.

Trees in the Garden of Saint-Paul HospitalA Post-Impressionist, Van Gogh is considered one of the first artists to use color as expression and to display deep emotions in his paintings. Visible brushstrokes and texture are apparent in his works. Despite his short lifespan of 37 years (1853-1890) he was a prolific artist, creating around 900 paintings and 1100 drawings.  Only one was sold. It was not until after his death that his talent was recognized by the art world.

The Van Gogh Exhibit was a joint project between the Rosenberg Library Museum and Children’s departments. For more information call 409.763.8854 x119.
